Below are some helpful explanations on how to use this site:
Top lists
Being in the top lists makes you immediately visible to a large number of people – all your actions should lead you towards reaching one of the top sports! Note that you only compete for the top lists if you have at least one picture in your user profile.
- Hottest Looks category – this is based on the rating people give your picture; you need to have at least 20 votes to be in this category
- Most Famous category – based on the Star rating people have given you
- Most Fans category – based on the number of people you have in your fan club – but only counting the fans who have at least one picture
- Coolest Website category – based on the number of votes people have given your best web site
The top lists are updated every 15 minutes, so not all the changes in the rankings will be reflected immediately.
Your pictures
It is important to have at least one picture of yourself. Without pictures of your own, you are not able to use many of the functions on the website. You need to have at least one picture to:
- rate and comment other pictures
- display your web site links
- participate in the top rankings list
You can send messages and participate in forums without having a picture though. Be careful – if you delete any pictures, you will lose all the comments and ratings attached to those!!
Points
Some actions in the web site require the use of points, while as some actions give you points.
Gaining points:
- rating a picture gives you 1 point
- logging in once a day gives 5 points
- being in a fan club and logging in once a day gives 5 points per fan club
- answering a questionnaire gives 25 points
Spending points
- rating a picture with a score 7 uses 50 points
- giving someone a Star rating uses 200 points
- uploading a picture costs 0…119 points, depending on how many pictures you already have
- voting for a website costs 100 points
Basically, you gain points by being an active member, and you spend them by giving your friends high ratings. Hopefully your friends do the same for you as well.
Star Rating points
You can give people you like, or who you feel have real star potential, Star points – this helps them gain visibility by boosting the Most Famous ratings.
Rating pictures
You can rate people on a scale of 1 to 7, where 1 pretty much means you think the person looks... umm, plain… in the picture, and where 7 means that this person looks super hot! You gain 1 point each time you rate someone’s picture, however, it will cost you 50 points to rate someone with 7. You can also give someone a Star point when rating their picture, but remember – this costs you 200 points.
There are some additional things to keep in mind:
- You must be logged in to rate pictures, otherwise your vote will not count
- You cannot rate your own pictures
- You must have at least one picture to rate others
- You cannot rate a picture which you have recently rated
- Make sure you have enough points if you want to give someone a rating of 7 – otherwise the vote will not count
- You can also comment pictures, when you rate them
- Even if you do not give someone a rating (by choosing “pass”), you can still comment their picture
- You can also comment your own picture, if you want to
Remember, people will see some of the recent sores given to them – and if you give out a lot of 1-s or 2-s, you might receive the same in retaliation.
Pictures are chosen randomly – so you might sometimes see a picture you have already rated, or even your own picture. Just choose “pass” in this instance.
Sometimes you may have received a rating from someone, but when you check their profile they have no pictures. This does not mean that they were able to rate you without having a picture – it just means they erased the picture.
Picture comments
People are able to comment your pictures. If you find some comments offensive, you can delete them when logged in and looking through the comments underneath the picture.
Submitting pictures
You can upload pictures under “Your Account” function – there is a link called “Manage Pictures” there. You can also delete your pictures there. You can upload up to 8 pictures to your user page. This costs a variable amount of points per picture, depending on how many pictures you already have – the first one is always free.
When you upload a picture, it will not immediately be displayed on your user page. A moderator will have to approve it first. This could take anywhere from a few minutes to a lot longer. This is to make sure your pictures comply with the Terms of Use. If the picture is not approved, you’ll get a message in your “WannabeStar” messages box instead (under “Your account”). The message will also explain why the picture was not approved - common reasons being that you are not visible enough in the picture, or that it is against some terms of use (ie nudity, promoting copyrighted items, etc).
You can only upload JPG images. If you have an image in a different format, eg GIF, TIFF, etc, use any picture management program to change the format. Typically, this is done with “Save as...” function.
Also, make sure the images comply with the size limitations. If you want to upload an image which does not match the size requirements, you’ll have to resize it. It is usually easier to resize images down, as resizing images up will affect the quality of the picture. You can use any picture management program for this – all of them have a resize function. Make sure the longest size is no longer than 640 pixels and the shortest is no shorter than 200 pix.
The picture size must not exceed 150k – but it’s actually preferable, if it is around half that size – this means it will load faster when people look at it. If the picture exceeds the 150k limit, you can use a picture management program to save it in lower resolution / quality – typically also found as an option under “Save as...”.
When you resize or change your pictures - don’t save over your original image – save it with another name instead!! That way you’ll still keep your original quality image.
Deleting Pictures
When you delete a picture, you will lose all the ratings given to this, as well as the comments. Sometimes this might be good, but if you later regret the decision, there is no way to recover the data. You could re-submit the picture, but this would mean starting from scratch again.
Your account
You can find all the relevant tools to change your user details, manage pictures, send and read messages, see notices from WannabeStar, block other users from seeing your details, etc. under the function “Your account”
Sending and reading messages
You have an inbox and an outbox function under “Your account” link. Please make sure you empty those regularly, as you cannot have more than 50 messages in each.
- If you have more than this in your outbox, you cannot send any messages.
- If you have more than this in your inbox, then other users will not be able to send you messages!
Also, if other users have blocked you, you are not able to send them messages.
Blocked list
If there is another user you don’t like, it’s possible to block this user from seeing your details, rating your pictures and sending you messages. Use block list function to manage this.
Friends list
Adding someone on a friends list will help you keep track of all your contacts.
Fan club
If you really like a certain user, then joining in his/her fan club is a convenient shortcut to keep close tabs on that person. It also has additional benefits:
- When you log in (but maximum once a day), you receive 5 points for any fan club you belong to.
- From the other user’s view, having a lot of fans will boost his/her rating in the Most Fans category (if you have at least one picture in your user profile)
You can only be a member of maximum 5 fan clubs at a time
Your user details
Provide as little or as much detail as you like. You can select whether you want to hide or display sensitive information such as e-mail or your age. You can also select whether you want to be able to accept messages from everyone, or only from people from your friends list.
Make sure your e-mail address is correct – in case you ever lose your password, the e-mail would be the only way to help you recover it. However, for safety reasons, if you want to display it publicly, it’s better if you user your secondary e-mail rather than the most important one you have. This way you can get rid of the e-mail at some point, if it gets filled up with spam or unwanted messages.
There is large data field where you can provide more information about yourself. Use this creatively to best promote yourself. But again, for safety reasons, please do not provide excessive personal / contact details there!
Logging out
Always log out after you have finished using the web site!
There is an automatic log-out as well which will kick in after a period of inactivity – but this is only meant as a back-up. It does not provide full protection. Remember, the consequences of someone accessing your user account can range from embarrassing to much, much worse!
Also, the automatic log-out means that you might find yourself logged out after doing something else for a while and then returning to the website. This could be inconvenient at times, but this is for your protection only!
Deactivating your account
If you for some reason should get tired of your account, you can always deactivate it. Deactivation does not automatically delete your information, nor does it delete your pictures, the ratings or comments received. There is first a cool-down period, during which the information will not be available for viewing by others, but is still retained. However, all your forum comments and messages in other people inboxes still exist during the cool down period and are available for viewing!
It will take some time before the full deactivation of account kicks in, during which you can always recover your user data, if you regret the deactivation. This means you’ll be able to recover the pictures, ratings, comments, etc.
There is also an option to fully delete your pictures at de-activation, in which case those cannot be recovered. Similar option applies to your website links and their ratings as well.
If you break the Terms of Use, your account is liable for deactivation by moderators. Usually this means that you cannot recover the account any more!!
Moderators
Moderators monitor the activity on the website and ensure the forum discussion do not get out of hand and that everyone follows the rules. They also preview the uploaded pictures and decide whether those should be allowed or not. The moderators’ decisions are pretty much final and they have the authority to deactivate your account if you break the rules!
